What is Diosgenin Extract?

Dioscorea(scientific name: Dioscorea oppositifolia L.) is a Dioscorea plant in the Dioscoreaceae family, which is wrapped with grassy vines. Tubers are long cylindrical and grow vertically. The stem is usually purplish red, right-handed, and glabrous. Single leaves, alternate in the lower part of the stem, opposite in the middle. Male inflorescences are spike-shaped inflorescences, 2-8 cm long, nearly erect, and 2-8 are born in leaf axils. The capsule is not reflexed; the seeds are born in the middle of the central axis of each chamber. Flowering period from June to September, fruiting period from July to November.

It is distributed in Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guizhou, northern Yunnan, Sichuan, eastern Gansu and southern Shaanxi. It grows on the hillsides, under the valley forests, in the bushes or weeds by the creeks and roads.

Diosgenin, a phytosteroid sapogenin, is the product of hydrolysis by acids, strong bases, or enzymes of saponins, extracted from the tubers of Dioscorea wild yam, such as the Kokoro. The sugar-free (aglycone) product of such hydrolysis, diosgenin is used for the commercial synthesis of cortisone, pregnenolone, progesterone, and other steroid products.
