Milk thistle extract silymarin is a perennial herb believed to have medicinal properties. The seeds contain silymarin, a group of compounds said to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Milk thistle is commonly used as a home remedy for liver problems, and it is often assumed that it will "detoxify" the liver. Studies have shown that milk thistle does not appear to have a significant effect on liver tissue or liver function.

Main Function
Milk thistle is most commonly used to treat liver diseases such as hepatitis and cirrhosis, but the herb is believed to prevent or treat high cholesterol, diabetes, heartburn, stomach indigestion, hangovers, gallbladder problems, menstrual pain, depression, and more .
1. Liver disease
Studies have shown that milk thistle extract silymarin can improve liver function by preventing toxic substances from binding to liver cells. However, new research shows that milk thistle neither improves liver function nor reduces the risk of death in patients with alcoholic liver disease, hepatitis B or C.
Milk thistle may benefit patients with mild, asymptomatic liver disease, reducing key liver enzymes in patients with subacute disease, indicating more normal liver function.
2. Chronic Hepatitis C
People with chronic hepatitis C sometimes use milk thistle and experience a reduction in symptoms and an improvement in their quality of life.
3. Type 2 diabetes
Research suggests that milk thistle may be beneficial for people with diabetes, especially those with type 2 diabetes. Because milk thistle extract silymarin, the active ingredient in milk thistle, has anti-inflammatory properties and acts as an antioxidant.
Possible Side Effects:
Milk thistle may cause many side effects, including headaches, nausea, diarrhea, bloating, and gas. Less commonly, muscle soreness, arthralgia, and sexual dysfunction have also been reported, and allergic reactions are possible.
