L-Ergothioneine has a wide range of applications and market prospects in the fields of organ transplantation, cell preservation, medicine, food and beverage, functional food, animal feed, cosmetics and biotechnology
Ergothioneine is a prevalent component of many microbial cells (Spirulina, Mycobacterium,
Stramonium and Ascomycetes, etc.) and can be synthesized in several fungi (enoki, shiitake, yellow and white sidearm, amygdala, etc.),
but not in bacteria. Animals are also unable to synthesize it on their own, and ergothioneine in the human body is mainly obtained through food (e.g., mushrooms, oats, cereals, etc.).
Ergothioneine uptake is dependent on a special transporter protein, OCTN1, which is present in the skin's keratinocytes and melanocytes,
so that all skin tissue cells can readily receive, access, and utilize EGT. (OCTN1 has a very high affinity for ergothioneine).
Mitochondria produce a lot of free radicals while generating energy. Excessive free radicals will lead to mitochondrial apoptosis,
which will result in cell death and aging of the body. Ergothioneine can enter the cell and mitochondria through the transporter
OCTN-1 on the cell membrane and mitochondrial membrane, and directly scavenge reactive oxygen radicals .
